Chapel Barn is a 13th Century building which has been converted in to two holiday cottages. The cottages are available to rent for holidays all year round. They are situated in the county of Somerset on the edge of the village of Compton Dundon near Street and Somerton. An 18th Century memorial to Admiral Hood looks down on the property. The nearby woods have foot paths running through with scenic views which are ideal for walkers.
Overall an outstandingly beautiful and easily accessible area. Come and have a relaxing holiday with us, you won't be disappointed.
History of the barn
Chapel Barn is a grade II listed building, once thought to have been a chapel. It is attached to Trays Farm House which dates back to the 16th Century. The property acquired its name when bought in 1734 by Thomas Trayne, a Somerton corn merchant. The wheel monchette pictured here on the barn was once the solar of an open hall house.
Trays Farm is a working farm which has been farmed by the Napper family for the last 60 years. The barn was once used for housing animals, before being used for cider making and in later years as farm storage and a workshop. It has now been converted to the highest standard for visitors to enjoy.
Chapel Barn 1 and 2
Both cottages have exposed beams and beautiful stone work, tastefully decorated with pieces of antique furniture.
Chapel Barn 1 is an open plan property which sleeps two and is the smaller of the two cottages. Chapel Barn 2 is much larger and sleeps four. Everything is included in the price and there is ample parking for both cottages.
Due to it being a working farm. We don't take pets and both cottages are non smoking.
Due to there being a fair number of steps within both cottages they are not suitable for the less mobile.
Local Amenities
The local pub and village are within walking distance away (½ mile) down the road, in the centre of the village. On the main road there is also a bus stop.
The town of Street is only 3 miles away and includes Clarks Village for the shopaholics! The historical town of Glastonbury is also near by as are the Somerset Levels and the city of Wells.
The South Coast towns of Lyme Regis and Weymouth or the Bristol channel towns of Clevedon, Weston-Super-Mare , Burnham-on-Sea, Minehead and Dunster are all within an hour's drive away.
Come and stay in a stunning location and enjoy a great holiday

Stay in Bed and Breakfast accommodation in the farmhouse or come for the afternoon on a Garden and Mill visit, especially if you are looking for a romantic wedding venue. Enjoy a bit of history, a wander along the stream among the flowers, then tea in a sunny corner of this Somerset garden. Look around the old mill, see the old machinery in action, and the new scheme for generating electricity. Then relax in the garden among the flowers (see above right). It is the perfect setting for your secluded and exclusive country wedding - a fairytale day to remember. There are streams and ponds, sculptures, and seasonal displays of iris, roses, delphiniums, day lilies, clematis, and dahlias. If you are staying a few days or a week, there is a different superb place to eat every night, and places to visit to suit every interest.
Gants Mill & Garden
Watergarden with sculptures, historic watermill for generating electricity and corn-grinding.
Flower-filled watergarden with ponds, streams, waterfalls, pergolas and garden sculptures
Historic watermill tour includes grinding corn and electricity generation
Teas and home-made cake in the fuchsia and begonia conservatory
Alison’s flower-filled watergarden has garden sculptures. Miller and historian Brian’s tour of the old watermill includes grinding corn and electricity generation.
Wander around Alison’s garden, by the streams, ponds, waterfalls and pergolas, and see the lovely garden sculptures, each in a perfect setting. Flower collections include irises, delphiniums, daylilies and dahlias. Her fuchsia and begonia conservatory is where teas and home-made cake are served.
Stepping down onto the flagged floor of the old watermill, you walk the length of the thousand year time-line showing the many uses of the mill in times gone by. Miller Brian starts up the Victorian turbine, and you hear the rumble of the grindstones stirring into life, and can feel the freshly ground meal, still warm. Peering down into the old waterwheel pit, you make out the new turbine with gushing water below it, and the generator humming as it puts electricity into the local grid.
Bed & Breakfast
Bed and breakfast are available in the farmhouse. The accommodation is just half a mile from Bruton in Somerset, and 5 miles from the Bath & West showground at Shepton Mallet, and the Wincanton racecourse. The rooms have been awarded Four Stars in the assessment scheme by VisitBritain, and the inspector added that the breakfasts are Five Star.
The rooms are smoke-free, have tea-making facilities, complimentary sherry and nibbles, television, central heating, and internet access from our wireless network. No pets, and children of 12 and over are welcome. The cost is £35 per person per night. The rooms are available all the year round apart from Christmas week.
Make a gift of a couple of days B&B to someone special with a presentation gift voucher.
Millpool View Room
The Millpool View Room has a romantic cream lacy four poster double bed, and also a single bed so it can be used as a double or twin room. It has an ensuite shower room, armchairs, antique brass and iron bedheads, antique furniture and a set of garden pictures on the walls.
Garden View Room
The Garden View Room has a cream lacy four poster double bed, antique brass and iron bedhead, armchairs, and a collection of watercolours of the house, cottage and garden by a local artist. On the wall where the sun shines is a collection of lovely old floral plates. The jug and basin on the dressing table are purely decorative - we are just in the process of putting in an ensuite shower. This is in the corner where the single bed (pictured above) used to be. The work should be completed by the end of February (before lambing starts).
Millpool View Single Room
The Millpool View Single Room is charmingly decorated with antique furniture, a handbasin, and antique lace. It has a private bathroom with shower over the bath, not shared with anyone else. Unlike the new ensuite facilities in the other rooms, this rare retro-chic bathroom has a preservation order on it (imposed by Brian, who says it is immaculate and fully functional, and avocado is a perfectly good colour.)

The Castle at Taunton
The Castle at Taunton is steeped in the drama and romance of English history. Once a Norman fortress, it has been welcoming travellers to the town since the 12th century. Today the Castle lives at peace with its turbulent past but preserves the atmosphere of its ancient tradition. The Chapman family have been running the hotel for 50 years and in that time it has acquired a worldwide reputation for the warmth of its hospitality. Laurels in the Good Food, RAC and AA Guides also testify the excellence of its hospitality.
Richard Guest, our Head Chef, was appointed with a mission, not merely to safeguard, but to enhance our jealously guarded reputation as one of the 20 best eating-houses in the country. Richard brings a bold, innovative style of cooking to the Castle's kitchen and is extending our British culinary repertoire in some exciting directions.
Specialities: At the Castle we create our menus by drawing inspiration from our growers, producers and farmers. Right from the very first asparagus served with our cured boar and local quails eggs, to spring lamb and young vegetables or steamed line-caught Bass with fresh peas and broad beans. Beautiful berries through the summer make for great simple pleasures such as strawberries and cream and in autumn when Brixham crab is at its best and local quinces, medlars, apples and pears are dropped at our door. All these things mean that we can give our customers the freshest tastes possible and then there is our totally British cheese board, with up to 16 artisan cheeses. Make sure you try the Elmhirst - it looks like Brie but infinitely better! You will also find an excellent room service menu offering lighter pasta dishes and the best sirloin steak we can buy.
THE CASTLE RESTAURANT IS OPEN FOR LUNCH AND DINNER MONDAY-SATURDAY AND LUNCH ONLY ON SUNDAYS.
